Parts of Mazar-e-Sharif Shrine Damaged Following 6.3-Magnitude Earthquake in Balkh

Following a 6.3-magnitude earthquake in Balkh province, parts of the historic shrine in Mazar-e-Sharif have been damaged.

Videos circulated on social media on Monday, November 3, show sections of the shrine collapsing as a result of the tremor.

Meanwhile, the Taliban’s Ministry of Public Health in Balkh reported that around 20 people were killed and more than 75 others were injured in the province.

The final death toll from the earthquake has not yet been determined.

Local Taliban officials in Samangan confirmed that two people were killed and about 200 others were injured.

Sources said that the Samangan–Balkh highway was blocked in the Tashqurghan Gorge due to landslides caused by the quake, and that several travelers lost their lives along the route.

Reports indicate that rocks fell from the mountains, crushing vehicles beneath them.

Shops located along the route were also destroyed.

The 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck at around 12:59 a.m. in Khulm District, Balkh province, and was felt across several provinces, including Kabul.
