German Chancellor Travels to U.S. to Discuss Trade Tariffs

Friedrich Merz, the Chancellor of Germany, has announced that he will travel to Washington, D.C., to discuss trade tariffs with Donald Trump, the President of the United States.

Merz said in an interview on Saturday, 21 February, with ARD television in Stuttgart that he will have a very clear European position on this, because tariff policy is a matter for the European Union, not individual member states, and that he will go to Washington with a coordinated European position.

The visit comes as the Supreme Court of the United States recently stated that the president had exceeded his authority by imposing tariffs under emergency economic powers.

Under Trump’s executive order, a 10 percent tariff on imports from all countries will take effect on 24 February and will remain in place for 150 days
