The International Save the Children Organization reports that in June of this year, over 80,000 children from Afghanistan were returned from Iran to Afghanistan.
On Wednesday, July 2, 2025, the International Save the Children Organization released a report stating that this figure has doubled compared to the previous month, putting Afghanistan’s service infrastructure on the brink of collapse.
The organization added that 6,700 of these children were unaccompanied, and approximately 39 percent of them were forcibly returned from Iran.
According to Save the Children, following the announcement of a ceasefire between Iran and Israel on June 26, 2025, more than 36,000 people entered Afghanistan from Iran in a single day.
Samira Sayed-Rahman, the advocacy director for Save the Children, stated: “Many families arrive in the country with only what they can carry. They are exhausted, frightened, and anxious.”
She further noted: “The international community must not turn a blind eye to this situation. It is time for serious steps to be taken to save the children and families of Afghanistan.”
The organization also stated that, in response to this situation, it has established two child support centers in Herat, providing psychological services and safe play spaces for children.
Recently, Sanjay Wijesekera, UNICEF’s regional director for South Asia, also stated that thousands of children enter Afghanistan through Islam Qala every day, and they are in urgent need of assistance.
