Following a sharp increase in rental prices in Kabul and several other provinces, the Taliban’s Ministry of Justice has called on citizens to report landlords who raise rents. The directive comes amid growing public concern over the affordability of housing in the Afghan capital and beyond.
On Thursday, May 1, 2025, Barkatullah Rasooli, spokesperson for the Taliban Ministry of Justice, stated on his official X account that property owners who increase rental prices will face questioning. He urged citizens to contact the ministry directly to file formal complaints.
Housing costs in Kabul have surged in recent months, placing additional pressure on tenants. The situation has been further exacerbated by the influx of returnees from Pakistan and Iran, which has made finding affordable rental housing increasingly difficult for many residents.
Despite the public call for complaints, the Taliban have yet to implement any concrete measures to regulate or control rent hikes, leaving tenants with limited practical recourse as housing pressures continue to mount.
